Designed by Tetsuya Nomura, Tifa was not present in early versions of Final Fantasy VII, and Aerith was the sole female lead. However during a phone call to project director Yoshinori Kitase, he suggested they kill Aerith at some point within the game, and introduce Tifa. With the idea approved, Nomura had difficulty deciding whether to give her design a mini-skirt or long pants.
